Godavarichya Leki — Inspiration & The Scheme
From the pioneering revolution in women’s education in 1946 to the formal Educational Adoption Scheme ensuring no daughter is left behind.
Godavarichya Leki Always Counts
“A thriving town, Latur is its noun…”
In 1946, at a time when circumstances were highly unfavorable for women’s education, a revolution took place in Latur. A visionary social leader, Hon. Late Shri. Puranmalji Lahoti, established Shri. Godavaridevi Lahoti Kanya Vidyalaya, managed and guided by Rajasthan Shikshan Sanstha, thereby planting the seeds of women’s education in the region.
He received invaluable support from Late Revered Swami Ramanand Tirtha, thinker Late Shri. Babasaheb Paranjape, and senior social reformer Late Mai Diwan. Their vision, dedication, and commitment laid a strong foundation for the institution’s journey.
As the years passed, the institution began to flourish. The contributions of generous donors supported its growth, while dedicated teachers nurtured generations of students with care and commitment. Gradually, the school became a protective shelter, like a banyan tree, for the daughters of Latur.
Education here was never limited to textbooks and classrooms. Along with academic learning, students were encouraged to develop practical skills and discover their talents. Girls received opportunities to learn sewing, craft, sports, art, elocution, and dance. Through the Science Forum and participation in competitive examinations across various subjects, the institution continued to nurture confident and versatile personalities.
The land here is sacred, the teachers are sincere and dedicated, and the atmosphere is enriched by the support and companionship of friends.
With immense hard work and collective effort, everyone together transformed a school into a temple of learning.
The daughters of this school began to soar high. Some became doctors, some qualified as Chartered Accountants, while others went on to serve as Government officials and achieve success in various fields.
Some students faced financial difficulties during their education. At such times, teachers extended a helping hand to support them. Even after retirement, former teachers continued to contribute to the institution in whatever way they could.
Former students, like daughters returning to their maternal home, continued to maintain their emotional bond with the school. Many came forward to contribute to the institution, and through these contributions, needy girls were able to continue their education and pursue their dreams.
The sensitivity and dedication of the institution’s leaders have been remarkable. They never sought personal recognition; instead, they chose to step forward and serve. They, too, embraced these daughters and stood by them whenever needed.
And what happened then?
The daughters of Godavari became even more empowered.
The echoes of their success spread far and wide. The tradition of dedication to this distinguished institution continued to grow, and the nurturing and support provided to its daughters became even stronger.
Within a short period, Godavari’s younger sister, Kesharbai, also became the inspiration for the establishment of a Primary School. The same tradition of education, care, and service began to take shape there as well.
Help began reaching students who were in need. Whenever difficulties arose, they found support. There were teachers who cared like mothers, and administrators who stood by them like fathers. Under their guidance and affection, the daughters continued to learn, grow, and move forward.
Before long, it became evident how beautiful this cycle of nature truly is.
From seeds, saplings emerge; with care and water, they grow stronger and eventually become magnificent trees.
We must not allow the sixty-year-long story of Godavari’s daughters to end here, friends. Instead, we should strive to support at least one daughter in her educational journey. Only when we help another person grow can we truly enrich our own lives and society.
Today’s daughter is tomorrow’s mother, and when she is empowered through education, her personality and potential shine brightly for generations to come.
Supporting these daughters through education is an inseparable expression of unconditional love, belonging, and gratitude. By helping them continue their education, we give back to society and honor the values upon which this institution was built.
Let us come together to extend our support to Godavari’s daughters and Kesharbai’s daughters.
“Today’s daughter is tomorrow’s mother, and when she is empowered through education, her personality and potential shine brightly for generations to come.”
